Every industry has its own language, its own priorities, and its own expectations of candidates. A cover letter for a banking role should sound different from one for a teaching position. A letter for an IT role should emphasise different things than one for a marketing or healthcare job.
This article gives you ready-to-use cover letter templates for six of the most common employment sectors in Sri Lanka โ banking and finance, IT and technology, marketing, education and teaching, healthcare, and retail and customer service. Each template is designed to be adapted, not used verbatim. Replace the bracketed placeholders with your real details, and add one specific company detail before sending.
Before using these templates, make sure you have read our guide on how to write a cover letter in Sri Lanka and our article on 5 cover letter mistakes to avoid. Understanding the principles behind a good cover letter helps you customise these templates effectively rather than just filling in the blanks.
How to Use These Templates
- Replace every [bracketed placeholder] with your real information
- Add one specific sentence about the company you are applying to
- Adjust the achievement highlighted in the second paragraph to match your actual experience
- Keep the total letter to one page when formatted in Word or Google Docs
- Save as PDF before attaching to your email
The most important customisation is in your opening paragraph โ replace the generic company reference with something specific you know about the actual employer. Five minutes of research on their website or LinkedIn provides what you need. This single change transforms a template into a targeted application. Read our article on cover letter mistakes for more on why this matters.

Final Tips for Using These Templates
- Never send a template without customising it. A recruiter at a bank who receives a letter with "[Bank Name]" still in the text will immediately discard it. Always do a final review before sending.
- Replace the achievement with your real one. The achievement in the second paragraph is the most important part. Use your actual number, your actual result. If the numbers are modest, that is fine โ specificity matters more than impressiveness.
- Add one company-specific detail. This single addition turns a template into a targeted letter. Research five minutes โ check their website, LinkedIn, or recent Facebook posts. One genuine detail is enough.
- Proofread for leftover placeholder text. Search for "[" in your document before saving to PDF. Any remaining placeholder will undermine the professionalism of the entire letter.
- Save as PDF with a professional file name. Firstname_Lastname_CoverLetter.pdf โ not "cl final v2.pdf".
Conclusion
A good template is not a shortcut โ it is a starting point. The real work is in the customisation: replacing the placeholders with specific details, adding genuine company knowledge, and making the achievement paragraph reflect your actual experience. Do that, and these templates will serve you well across any job application in Sri Lanka.
And remember โ when a cover letter is optional, a well-customised one never hurts. When it is required, a generic one does more damage than none at all. Always choose specificity over speed.
